The Chicago Cubs celebrated wrapping up Major League Baseball’s National League Central division with victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night.
The Cubs lost to the same opposition at Wrigley Field on Thursday and did not know they had won the division until the San Francisco Giants defeated St Louis Cardinals later that night.
However, Miguel Montero smacked a walk-off lead-off home run in the 10th inning to lift the Cubs to to a 5-4 come-from-behind success in front of their own fans on Friday.
Elsewhere, the Washington Nationals need only six more wins to wrap up NL East after a 7-2 defeat of the Atlanta Braves, while the New York Mets kept one hand on a wild card position with a 3-0 defeat of the Minnesota Twins.
Jordy Mercer had an RBI single with the bases loaded in the 10th as the Pittsburgh Pirates maintained their own wild card hopes with a 9-7 success against the Cincinnati Reds.
The Philadelphia Phillies secured a 4-3 win over the Miami Marlins, with pinch-hitter Jimmy Paredes singling home the winning run with one out in the 13th, the Chicago White Sox defeated the Kansas City Royals 7-4 and the Boston Red Sox saw off the New York Yankees by the same scoreline.
The Cleveland Indians took their season record against Detroit to 12-1 with an 11-4 drubbing of the Tigers, while the San Francisco Giants were 8-2 conquerors of the St Louis Cardinals.
