Dodgers edge out Yankees to increase lead

Justin Turner’s ninth-inning double gave the Los Angeles Dodgers a valuable 2-0 Major League Baseball win over the New York Yankees on Wednesday.

The victory enabled the Dodgers to increase their National League West lead to five games over the San Francisco Giants, while the Yankees missed out on a chance to make ground on the Toronto Blue Jays in the wild card race.

Toronto were beaten 8-1 by the Tampa Bay Rays at Rogers Centre, a result which leaves them two-and-a-half games behind American League East pacesetters the Boston Red Sox, who themselves lost to Mark Trumbo’s lone run in the second inning of the match against the Baltimore Orioles.

The San Diego Padres wrapped up a series sweep of the San Francisco Giants with a 3-1 success, while Tanner Roark tossed seven scoreless innings with seven strikeouts as the Washington Nationals edged the New York Mets 1-0.

The Chicago Cubs dented the St Louis Cardinals‘ wild card hopes with a 7-0 win, a scoreline matched by the Milwaukee Brewers against the Cincinnati Reds. The Oakland Athletics went one better with an 8-0 rout of the Kansas City Royals.

Elsewhere, the Philadelphia Phillies sunk the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-2, the Miami Marlins downed the Atlanta Braves 7-5 and the Detroit Tigers defeated the Minnesota Twins 9-6.

The Seattle Mariners extended their winning streak to eight matches with a 2-1 defeat of the Los Angeles Angels.

George Springer and Teoscar Hernandez homered as the Houston Astros improved their fading play-off prospects with an 8-4 success over the Texas Rangers.

A five-run fifth inning proved decisive as the Arizona Diamondbacks downed the Colorado Rockies 11-6, while three runs in the fourth and sixth enabled the Cleveland Indians to come from behind and sink the Chicago White Sox 6-1.
