Baltimore Orioles close the gap on Boston Red Sox

The Baltimore Orioles moved to within two games of Major League Baseball’s American League East leaders Boston on Tuesday night.

JJ Hardy hit a three-run homer and Nolan Reimold added a two-run shot later in the second inning as the Red Sox were beaten 6-3.

The Arizona Diamondbacks proved far too strong for the Colorado Rockies, coming through 11-4, while the Seattle Mariners blanked the Los Angeles Angels 8-0 in another one-sided contest.

Elsewhere, the New York Mets did their National League wild-card hopes no harm with a 4-3 extra-innings victory over the Nationals in Washington. However, St Louis remain just a half-game behind them after a 4-2 win over the Chicago Cubs.

The San Francisco Giants lost ground in the race after a late implosion saw the San Diego Padres score five in the ninth inning to take a 6-4 win.

A seven-run sixth inning proved decisive as the Chicago White Sox overcame the Cleveland Indians 8-1, while the Minnesota Twins downed the Detroit Tigers by the same scoreline.

Sean Rodriguez’s three-run pinch-hit homer in the ninth snapped the Pittsburgh Pirates’ four-game skid, sealing a 5-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning set up the New York Yankees for a 3-0 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers, while the Cincinnati Reds recorded their fifth successive victory, defeating the Milwaukee Brewers 6-4.

A four-run eighth paved the way for the Oakland Athletics to beat the Kansas City Royals 5-4, while the Texas Rangers saw off the Houston Astros 3-2.

Elsewhere, the Miami Marlins won an entertaining contest against the Atlanta Braves 7-5 and the Tampa Bay Rays saw off the Toronto Blue Jays 6-2.
