Blue Jays stay top after beating Rays

The Toronto Blue Jays regained sole possession of top spot in the American League East with a 5-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday.

Devon Travis hit a game-tying two-run single in the seventh and Russell Martin crushed the go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth as Toronto avoided a three-game sweep against Tampa Bay and moved a game ahead of Boston at the division summit.

Khris Davis’ double in the ninth inning earned the Oakland Athletics a 1-0 walk-off victory against the Red Sox at the Coliseum.

The New York Yankees closed to within 3 1/2 games of Baltimore and Detroit for the AL’s final play-off berth, Chase Headley and Austin Romine driving in two runs apiece in a 5-2 win against the Orioles.

Justin Upton’s two-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning lifted the Tigers to a 6-5 success against the Kansas City Royals.

The Houston Astros defeated AL West-leading Texas 7-6, ending the Rangers’ seven-game winning streak and moving within 1 1/2 games of Baltimore for the league’s second wild card in the process.

Jason Heyward delivered the walk-off hit in the 13th inning for the National League Central-leading Chicago Cubs, having tied the game up in the ninth, in a 3-2 win against the San Francisco Giants.

The AL Central-leading Cleveland Indians pipped the Miami Marlins 6-5, Lonnie Chisenhall capping a three-run ninth-inning rally with a two-out RBI single, while Jose De Leon struck out nine in six innings on his major league debut as the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers overcame the San Diego Padres 7-4.

Randal Grichuk and Kolten Wong went deep to help St Louis snap a three-game skid with a 5-2 triumph over the Cincinnati Reds, and the New York Mets stayed within one game of the Cardinals for the second NL wild-card berth by beating the East-leading Washington Nationals 5-1.

Milwaukee hammered Pittsburgh 10-0, condemning the Pirates to their sixth straight loss. Domingo Santana homered twice and Jonathan Villar delivered a pinch-hit grand slam to help the Brewers seal a three-game sweep.

In other games, the Chicago White Sox saw off the Minnesota Twins 13-11 in 12 innings, the Los Angeles Angels were 4-2 winners against the Seattle Mariners, the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Colorado Rockies 8-5, and the Atlanta Braves toppled the Philadelphia Phillies 2-0.
