MLB Wrap: Blue Jays stay in charge

The Toronto Blue Jays consolidated top spot in the American League East on Wednesday evening with a 5-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.

The Blue Jays never looked back after Jose Bautista homered on the game's first pitch, and comfortably maintained their two-game lead over Boston in the standings.

The Orioles slipped four games behind Toronto, tied with Detroit for the second wild-card spot.

The Red Sox squeezed past the Tampa Bay Rays 8-6, while rookie JaCoby Jones doubled twice and scored the winning run in the ninth inning as the Tigers overcame the Chicago White Sox 3-2.

The Colorado Rockies crushed the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-0 in the opener of a doubleheader, before the tables were turned with a 10-8 scoreline in game two.

The San Francisco Giants were 4-2 winners against the Arizona Diamondbacks, left-hander Matt Moore striking out seven over 5 1/3 solid innings en route to his first career victory at AT&T Park.

Kelly Johnson's tiebreaking three-run double in the eighth inning spurred the New York Mets to a third straight triumph – 5-2 against the Miami Marlins – while the Minnesota Twins' dismal losing streak stretched to 13 games as they went down 8-4 to the AL Central-leading Cleveland Indians.

Carlos Gomez posted his third career grand slam as the AL West-leading Texas Rangers sealed a three-game sweep with a comprehensive 14-1 success against the Seattle Mariners.

The National League East-leading Washington Nationals toppled the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1, Wilson Ramos' go-ahead RBI single in the seventh inning proving decisive, and the NL Central-leading Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5.

In other games, the Los Angeles Angels saw off the Cincinnati Reds 3-0, the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the St Louis Cardinals 3-1, the Houston Astros edged the Oakland Athletics 4-3, the Atlanta Braves romped past the San Diego Padres 8-1, and the New York Yankees rallied for a 5-4 victory in 13 innings against the Kansas City Royals.
