Nationals march on; Braves beaten

Max Scherzer struck out 11 batters as the Washington Nationals beat the Chicago Cubs 4-1.

In seven innings, Scherzer allowed only an Addison Russell home run. That briefly levelled the scores at 1-1 but Wilson Ramos immediately responded in kind as Washington pulled away to a 4-1 win.

They lead the National League East at 40-24, with the Cubs 43-19 atop the Central Division.

The Miami Marlins beat the San Diego Padres 13-4 and are third in the East, seven games behind the Nats and two behind the New York Mets. The Atlanta Braves lost 9-8 to the Cincinnati Reds, Adam Duvall with a two-run homer and a further RBI.

NL West leaders the San Francisco Giants beat the Milwaukee Brewers 11-5, while the Arizona Diamondbacks won 3-2 against the Los Angeles Dodgers with home runs from Paul Goldschmidt and Jake Lamb.

American League West leaders the Cleveland Indians lost 2-1 to the Kansas City Royals, who are now just two games behind them. Whit Merrifield’s home run proved decisive.

Adam Eaton scored JB Shuck for the winning run in the 12th inning as the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 10-9. The Minnesota Twins beat the Los Angeles Angels 9-4.

The Oakland Athletics chased Texas Rangers pitchers Cesar Ramos and Tom Wilhelmsen for a combined 13 runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings as they beat the AL West leaders 14-5. Khris Davis had five RBIs, including a three-run blast off Ramos.

In inter-league play, the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-0, Odubel Herrera with three RBIs including a solo homer.
