Cubs bring down in-form Giants

Jake Arrieta starred again as the Chicago Cubs cruised to an impressive 8-1 MLB win over the in-form San Francisco Giants at At&T Park on Friday night.

The Giants had won eight in a row coming into this contest but had no answer for the Cubs’ ace.

Arrieta struck out eight in seven innings of one-run ball for his eighth win of the season, supported by an early three-run shot from Kris Bryant in a five-run second inning, with Ben Zobrist and Jorge Soler adding back-to-back homers in the eighth.

The Los Angeles Dodgers let the Giants off the hook, with two-run homers from Yasiel Puig and Justin Turner not able to stop the San Diego Padres from snatching a dramatic 7-6 win.

Kenley Jansen yielded a walk-off, two-run home run to Padres outfielder Melvin Upton Jr in the bottom of the ninth.

The Pittsburgh Pirates squeezed out a 2-1 win over the Colorado Rockies as Gerrit Cole held the visitors to one run on 10 hits over seven innings despite failing to record a strikeout in a start for the first time in his career.

The St Louis Cardinals, third in the NL Central, lost a wild game 11-7 to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Arizona scored five in the eighth inning to go 9-2 up, then added home runs from Chris Herrmann and Brandon Drury in the ninth for a nine-run lead, only to see the Cardinals rally late on, capitalising on errors to get within four before Jake Barrett shut the door and collected the save.

Freddie Freeman hit a pair of two-run homers as the Atlanta Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-1 while Michael Conforto hit the go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth as the New York Mets beat the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2.

Ryan Zimmerman and Michael Taylor both cleared the fences as the Washington Nationals beat the Miami Marlins 4-1.

In the American League, Jackie Bradley Jr extended his hitting streak to 25 games with a home run but could not prevent the Boston Red Sox from losing 4-2 at home to the Cleveland Indians.

Cleveland’s fifth win in a row saw them close to within 1.5 games at the top of the AL Central as the Chicago White Sox lost 4-1 to the Kansas City Royals.

Kevin Kiermaier hit a three-run triple as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Detroit Tigers 7-5, while Josh Donaldson, Jose Bautista, Michael Saunders and Darwin Barney all went deep in a 9-3 Toronto Blue Jays win over the Minnesota Twins.

Colby Lewis pitched seven scoreless innings as the Texas Rangers edged out the Houston Astros, while Carlos Beltran had three hits and three RBIs as the New York Yankees beat the Oakland Athletics 8-3.

Joey Rickard, Manny Machado, Mark Trumbo and Chris Davis went deep as the Baltimore Orioles strengthened their position at the top of the AL East with a 9-4 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

In an interleague contest, the Seattle Mariners scored four times in the seventh inning on their way to an 8-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds.
