Rangers rousted; Yankees back on track

A bases-loaded triple-play helped the Chicago White Sox to a 5-0 win over the Texas Rangers on Friday night.

Jose Quintana tossed seven scoreless innings but needed help in his final frame as the Rangers loaded the bases.

But Mitch Moreland’s shot to right field was caught by Adam Eaton, and Ian Desmond was then doubled off first before Prince Fielder, running from third, was caught in a rundown to preserve the shutout.

Texas had entered the game having won four straight but this loss saw them surrender top spot in the AL West standings as Oakland made it six in a row with an 8-5 victory over the Toronto Blue Hays, sparked by Chris Coghlan’s three-run homer.

Jacoby Ellsbury stole home as the New York Yankees snapped a three-game losing streak with a 6-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Ellsbury stole home behind the back of Rays left-hander Matt Moore to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth – the first straight steal of home by a Yankee in 15 years.

The Kansas City Royals stayed on top of the AL Central with a 4-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles, while the Boston Red Sox beat the Houston Astros 6-2.

Carlos Santana’s lead-off home run set the tone for the Cleveland Indians in a 2-1 win over the Detroit Tigers and Nelson Cruz hit a two-run homer as the Seattle Mariners scored three times in the 10th inning to snatch a 5-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

The Chicago Cubs continued their early dominance in the National League with an 8-1 rout of the Cincinnati Reds moving them to 13-4.

A night after Jake Arrieta no-hit the Reds in a 16-0 demolition, the Cubs were comfortable winners once again as Jon Lester pitched seven strong innings and delivered a squeeze bunt, while Anthony Rizzo and Javier Baez homered.

The Washington Nationals beat the Minnesota Twins 8-4 to move to 12-4 at the top of the NL East, while the Arizona Diamondbacks had their recent hot streak ended in an 8-7 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Curtis Granderson crushed two homers – one of them his first grand slam for the New York Mets – to power them to a 6-3 win over the Atlanta Braves, while Maikel Franco hit two home runs as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-2.

The Los Angeles Dodgers had their lead at the top of the NL West cut as they lost 7-5 to nearest rivals Colorado, while Jeff Samardzija marked his home debut as a San Francisco Giants with 7 2/3 innings of one-run ball in an 8-1 win over the Miami Marlins.

Wil Myers hit a home run and collected three RBI as the San Diego Padres beat the St Louis Cardinals 4-1.
