Second seed Lin Dan was forced to pull out all the stops against Kanta Tsuneyama to reach the quarter-finals of the YONEX German Open on Thursday.
The Chinese star was pushed to his limits at the Innogy Sportshalle in Mulheim an der Ruhr, coming back from a game down to beat Tsuneyama 20-22, 21-14, 21-18.
The Japanese shuttler was 18-17 up in the final game, but Dan rallied to win the last four points in a row to reach the final eight. There, he faces Ka Long Angus NG after the sixth seed deated Emil Holst 21-18, 21-11 earlier in the day.
Third seed Yuqi Shi rolled over Kantaphon Wangcharoen 21-11, 21-5 and fourth seed Tien Chen Chou beat Subhankar Dey 21-7, 21-6.
Meanwhile, in the women’s draw, top seed Akane Yamaguchi survived a second game comeback from Yu Po Pai to defeat her 21-17, 19-21, 24-22 in a thriller. In the final game, Pai was up 22-21 before the Japanese player reeled off three points for the win.
Elsewhere, second seed Ji Hyun Sung eased past fellow South Korean Hyo Min Kim 21-14, 21-14 and third seed Nozomi Okuhara came back from a game down to beat Fangjie Gao 20-22, 21-11, 21-18.
