Lee Chong Wei’s poor run of form continued as he suffered a first-round defeat at the French Open.
The former World No 1 was sent packing by unseed Japanese shuttler Kenta Nishimoto, going down 21-14, 21-15.
The Malaysian also suffered a second-round loss at the Denmark Open last week, with India’s H.S. Prannoy coming out on top on that occasion.
Prannoy safely negotiated his opening test, wrapping up a 21-15, 21-17 victory over Lee Hyun Il.
Chong Wei wasn’t the only big name to fall – second seed Son Wan Ho – a semi-finalist in Denmark – was beaten 21-16, 21-19 by Hans-Kristian Solberg Vittinghus.
Others to advance included fourth seed Shi Yuqi, Srikanth Kidambi and Chen Long.
There were no major upsets in the women’s draw, with top seed Tai Tzu Ying and second seed PV Sindhu both advancing safely.
Saina Nehwal, Akane Yamaguchi, Carolina Marin and Ratchanok Intanon all booked their places in the second round too.
