Chong Wei clears first hurdle in Denmark

World No 7 Lee Chong Wei is safely through to the second round of the Denmark Open after dispatching Spaniard Pablo Abian in straight games.

The Malaysian shuttler trailed 4-9 early in the opening game but went on an eight-point winning streak to turn the tables and take the first game.

The second game was evenly contested until Chong Wei pulled away midway through to seal a comfortable win.

Elsewhere, top seed Son Wan Ho needed three games to get past Indonesian Anthony Ginting in a thrilling clash.

Ginting narrowly edged the first game before Son recovered to take the next two for a 21-23, 21-17, 21-17 victory.

Also advancing was second seed Viktor Axelsen and fifth seed Chou Tien Chen.

There were two upset results, with fourth seed Shi Yuqi and sixth Chen Long of China both suffering surprise defeats to unseeded players.

Shi was beaten 21-19, 21-13 by Rajiv Ouseph, while Chen went down 21-19, 22-20 to South Korean Lee Hyun Il.

In the women’s draw, India’s Saina Nehwal beat Olympic champion Carolina Marin 22-20 21-18 in the pick of the first-round matches.

Others to advance included top seed Tai Tzu Ying and third seed Sung Ji Hyun, but second seed PV Sindhu was another casualty, going down 21-17, 23-21 to China’s Chen Yufei.
