Zhao wins opener at China International Challenge

Chinese second seed Zhao Junpeng reached the second round of the China International Challenge in Hainan on Wednesday. 

Zhao needed just 27 minutes to defeat countryman Junchen An 11-7, 11-8, 13-12 and set up a second round meeting against Haichao Liu of China after he got past Chile's Qin Zheng 13-10, 13-11, 11-9.

In some other men's first round results, China's Gu Junfeng reached the next round when his third-seeded South African opponent Jacob Maliekal was forced to retire injured after just six minutes while trailing 6-3.

Fourth seed Hashiru Shimono of Japan needed 52 minutes to defeat China's Guo Xinwa 11-5, 11-5, 9-11, 11-8; Guo Kai of China battled for 46 minutes to get past countryman Zhengze Gao 11-13, 11-1, 11-7, 5-11, 13-10 while Japan's Yusuke Onodera saw off Xin Anqi of China 11-4, 11-9, 7-11, 11-8.

Women's first round results, where no seeded players were in action on Wednesday, Zhou Meng of China needed 58 minutes to battle past Japan's Sayaka Takahashi 11-7, 6-11, 8-11, 13-11, 13-12; China's Zhiyi Wang beat countryman Chen Chen 11-8, 11-4, 11-6 and in an all-China affair Shijun Qiao got past Zhang Shuxian 8-11, 11-9, 11-9, 13-11.

Ji Shuting of China crushed Vietnam's Thu Huyen Le 11-5, 11-7, 11-6 in just 18 minutes while in another all-China matchup Cai Yanyan beat Shen Yaying 11-5, 13-11, 11-6.
