Big guns battle as Rockets beat Warriors in PBL

Mumbai Rockets secured a morale-boosting 4-3 win over an in-form Awadhe Warriors side in the Premier Badminton League on Friday.

Both teams had won their opening two matches of this year’s PBL, raising the prospect of a mouth-watering clash between the two form sides of the competition.

The first match of the tie was the doubles clash between V Shem Go and Markis Kido of Awadhe and Lee Yong Dae and V Nipitphon of Mumbai, with the Rockets duo securing a hard-fought three-game win to give their side an early lead.

Next up was the big clash between Awadhe’s Kidambi Srikanth and Ajay Jayara, and though Srikanth looked in control early on, Jayara was gradually able to turn the tables and close out a 5-11, 15-14, 11-5 victory as Mumbai led 2-0.

Another big match followed between top-ranked shuttlers Saina Nehwal and Sung Ji Hyun, and this time it was Nehwal who was able to carve out a 12-10, 4-11, 11-5 result as the Warriors reduced the deficit to 2-1.

But HS Prannoy would give the Rockets an unassailable 4-1 lead by winning his trump match against Wing Ki Vincent Wong 14-12, 9-11, 11-8 to secure the bonus point for his side.

Awadhe’s Bodin Isara and Savitree Amitrapai were convincing 11-8, 11-4 winners over Nipitphon Puangpuapech and Nadieżda Zieba in the mixed doubles, but not even the two points earned from their trump match was enough to prevent a 4-3 Mumbai victory.
