There were no upsets in the men’s singles on the opening day of the Malaysia International Challenge on Tuesday.
Top seed Tien Minh Nguyen of Vietnam opened proceedings at Dewan Serbaguna in Sabah, defeating Japanese shuttler Ryotaro Maruo 21-14, 21-18 to advance to the second round.
Second seed Kenta Nishimoto of Japan was also in action, battling through a tense opening game to eventually overcome local Jia Wei Tan 22-20, 21-13.
South African fourth seed Jacob Maliekal survived a second set comeback from Jan Yan Ng, winning 21-14, 18-21,21-14, while Pannawit Thongnuam and Joo Ven Soong were also victorious.
Third seed Kanta Tsuneyama is in action on Wednesday.
