Top seeds, Wei Nan in the men’s draw and Busanan Ongbumrungpan in the women’s draw, advanced to the semi-finals of the Yonex Sunrise Indonesian Masters on Friday.
In the men’s draw, Wei was made to work incredibly hard against Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk as the former won 15-21, 25-23, 21-18 in what turned out to be a quite thrilling contest.
The first game went the way of Saensomboonsuk as Wei was slow out of the blocks and was leaving the shuttlecock in poor parts of the court. Saensomboonsuk capitalised.
However, Wei tightened things up in the second game and was able to grind his opponent down to eventually win it 25-23.
In the decider, Wei, who was not at his best all day, showed his vast experience as his superior course management shone through. He took the decider 21-18 and in the process earned his spot in the semi-finals.
Elsewhere in the men’s draw, there were also wins for Huang Yuxiang, Shi Yuqi and Zhao Jun Peng.
In the women’s draw, Ongbumrungpan had far too much firepower for Zhao Jun Peng as she won 21-14, 21-11.
Ongbumrungpan was sublime on the day as she moved Jun Peng around the court at will with a combination of deft touches and telepathic anticipation.
Elsewhere in the women’s draw, Chochuwong Pornpawee, Nichaon Jindapon and Goh Liu Ying all recorded victories too.
