There were upsets in the men’s and women’s singles semi-final matches at badminton’s US Open at El Monte, California on Saturday.
In the men’s singles, unseeded Kanta Tsuneyama of Japan surprised India’s fourth seed 21-10, 21-14 in a convincing win lasting just 33 minutes.
He will be up against Korea Republic’s Lee Hyun Il, who hammered Guatemala’s Kevin Cordon 21-16, 21-8, in Sunday’s final.
In a big upset in the women’s semi-finals, unseeded Saena Kawakami of Japan needed 40 minutes to beat Canadian second seed Michelle Li 21-18, 21-12.
And in another woman’s singles upset, Japan’s unseeded Ayumi Mine beat seventh seed Linda Zetchiri of Bulgaria 22-20, 21-12 in 46 minutes.
