Malaysian national singles coach Hendrawan has said that shuttler Lee Chong Wei is more concerned about winning gold at the 2016 Olympic Games than being the top-ranked player in the world.
Chong Wei has failed to claim the gold medal at the last two Olympic Games in 2008 and 2012 after losing to China’s Lin Dan on both occasions.
With the 2016 Olympics fast approaching, Chong Wei has established himself as the man to beat.
“He (Chong Wei) has told me that his world number one ranking does not come close to how much he wants to win an Olympic gold medal,” Hendrawan was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.
Chong Wei pulled out of this week’s Australian Open due to a muscle injury, but he has been in excellent form this year, winning four titles.
“We have two months to go and we are focusing more on tactics and strategies,” Hendrawan said. “Lee Chong Wei must also learn to cope with the pressure as well as work on his strength.”
