Chen and Saina crash in Japan

Men's Top seed Chen Long of China crashed to defeat against Tian Houwei, while women's second seed Saina Nehwal lost in the second round of badminton's Yonex Japan Open on Thursday.

The world number one was beaten in straight games by unseeded countryman Tian, losing 21-16, 21-17 in 42 minutes.

In other men's matches, fifth seed Lin Dan from China beat Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei 21-17, 21-10. Indonesia's Tommy Sugiarto caused an upset when he came from behind to beat fourth seed Kento Momota of Japan 16-21, 21-13, 21-19 in one hour 27 minutes.

Taiwan's sixth seed Chou Tien Chen got past Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka of Indonesia in three games winning 21-13, 17-21, 21-16 under just under an hour.

Denmark's seventh seed Viktor Axelsen had little trouble beating countryman Hans-Kristian Vittinghus in straight games coming through 21-10, 21-18. South Korea's Lee Dong Keun had few problems beating India's H. S. Prannoy 21-19, 21-16.

In a surprise, unseeded Parupalli Kashyap of India beat countryman and No. 3 seed  Kidambi Srikanth in straight games, winning 21-11, 21-19 in 44 minutes. Ihsan Maulana Mustofa of Indonesia got past Hong Kong's Hu Yun convincingly 21-15, 21-14.

In the women's singles, Spain's top seed Carolina Marin won her match in three games against Japan's Sayaka Takahashi, coming through 21-17, 15-21, 21-12.

Third seed Li Xuerui of China had little trouble defeating Japan's Kaori Imabeppu 21-15, 23-21 in 41 minutes.

In a big upset unseeded Minatsu Mitani of Japan beat India's No. 2 seed Saina Nehwal 21-13, 21-16 in 41 minutes.

Seventh seed Wang Shixian of China beat Japan's Ayumi Mine in three games, winning 15-21, 23-21, 21-14 in one hour 31 minutes. China's sixth seed Wang Yihan had little trouble dispatching Taiwan's Pai Yu Po 21-18, 21-12. 

Taiwan's fourth seed Tai Tzu Ying got past South Korea's Bae Yeon Ju 21-15, 21-11 in 34 minutes. Thailand's fifth seed Ratchanok Intanon crashed to defeat against Nozomi Okuhara of Japan losing 15-21, 21-13, 21-3. 

Japan's Akane Yamaguchi was too strong for America's Beiwen Zhang winning 21-11, 21-15.
