Malaysia is set to send a complete squad to compete at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, after shuttlers in five different categories all qualified for the August showpiece.
Based on the Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) Race to Rio Rankings, two-time Olympic runner-up Lee Chong Wei is in second place, while the men’s doubles pair of Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong are in ninth.
Malaysia’s top women’s shuttler, Tee Jing Yi (ranked 18th), mixed doubles’ pair Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying (eight) and women’s doubles pair Vivian Hoo Kah Mun/Woon Khe Wei (12th) all made the cut as well.
According the BWF rules, only the top 36 in the singles and top 16 doubles pairs on the Race to Rio Rankings qualify for the Games.
Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Seri Mohamad Norza Zakaria was pleased with the country’s success in terms of qualifying for the Olympics based on their rankings.
“The national shuttlers have proved their worth by qualifying to the Olympic Games,” Zakaria is quoted by Bernama.
“Chong Wei and Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying are the best examples of athletes who have displayed outstanding performance and I hope they will have a chance of making it to the podium.”
