Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon won the Singapore Open on Sunday and will become the new world number one when the rankings are updated on Thursday.
Ratchanok came from behind to beat China’s Sun Yu 18-21, 21-11, 21-14 to clinch her third consecutive World Superseries title, with the 21-year-old having also won the India Open and the Malaysia Open earlier this month.
Ratchanok, who will dethrone Carolina Marin at the top of the rankings, was over the moon after triumphing over Yu and is now targeting a gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
“Today I made many mistakes, my opponent too, but I managed to get back into the game earlier than her,” she told reporters. “I knew I could do it today and I feel proud of myself. I want to be the world No 1, and now I want to win an Olympic gold medal for my country.”
The 21-year-old made history with her win at the Singapore Open as she became the first women’s shuttler to win three Superseries title in as many weeks.
