Yamaguchi claims Marin scalp

Top seed Carolina Marin of Spain is out of the Singapore Open, beaten in three games by Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi.

Yamaguchi, seeded eighth in Singapore City this week, turned the tables on Marin after losing the first game to complete a 13-21, 21-18, 21-18 victory.

The last two games were fiercely contested, with the lead changing hands on several occasions, but when it came down to crunch time, it was the Japanese shuttler who won the points that mattered.

Next up for Yamaguchi is a semi-final showdown against third seed Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand.

The 21-year-old advanced after beating her countrywoman Porntip Buranaprasertsuk 21-12, 21-18.

The second semi-final is an all-Chinese affair between He Bingjiao and Sun Yu.

He defeated American Beiwan Zhang 21-16, 21-15, while Sun upset sixth seed Sung Ji Hyun 21-15, 19-21, 21-19 in a hard-fought one hour and 24 minute encounter.
