The Badminton Association of India (BAI) has revealed that is planning to recommend shuttler Ajay Jayaram for the Sports Ministry's TOP (Target Olympic Podium) scheme.
Jayaram, who returned from injury a year ago, recently regained his place at the top-25 in the world rankings following his runner-up finish at the Korea Open.
“It was a commendable performance by Jayaram. We have asked the technical committee to compile his profile and we are planning to recommend his name for TOP scheme,” said BAI president Dr. Akhilesh Das Gupta.
Jayaram came close to qualifying for the 2012 London Olympics only to be pipped by P Kashyap at the last moment.
The race to qualify for Rio in 2016 comes to a close on May 5, 2016, and Jayaram will have a chance to qualify if he can repeat the kind of performance he delivered in Korea in the coming tournaments.
Six shuttlers have already been included in the TOP scheme – London Olympics bronze-medallist Saina Nehwal, P V Sindhu, Kashyap, Srikanth, RMV Gurusai Dutt and Prannoy.
