Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying have expressed their jubilation after triumphing at the New Zealand Open on Sunday.
The pair battled past the Chinese duo of Zheng Siwei and Li Yinhui 21-19, 22-20 to win their first mixed doubles title of the season.
Reflecting on the match, Peng Soon praised the determination and tenacity that he and his partner had shown as they were trailing 11-15 in the first game and 3-7 in the second before coming from behind to win both games.
“I’m really happy to win our first title of the year,” he told The Star. “It was a tough match but we didn’t give up and came back several times.”
Liu Ying echoed her partner’s sentiments and added that she was glad they got over their early jitters to come out on top.
“We’re really glad to pull through as we were both quite nervous during the final,” she said. “It was a close battle but the right attitude and experience helped us through it.”
