Ji Hyun Sung defeated Sayaka Sato in the final of the women’s singles at the Syed Modi International Badminton Championship on Sunday.
The South Korean came back from a game down to eventually overcome Sato 12-21, 21-18, 21-18 on the courts of the BBD U.P. Badminton Academy in Lucknow, India.
The second seed was nowhere in the opening game, trailing 13-2 at one stage.
But Sung turned on the class in the second game, running out to a 10-2 lead. While the Japanese star rallied to make it 11-all, Sung pulled away to force a deciding game.
Sato again fought back from a seven-point deficit in the final game and it was anyone’s title at 18-all.
However, Sung won the final three points in a row to clinch the title.
