National University Lady Bullpups head coach Babes Castillo is not surprised when his wards rolled over their biggest rival, University of Santo Tomas, in their first meeting in the UAAP girls volleyball tournament.
The Lady Bullpups humbled the junior Golden Tigresses, 10-25, 10-25, 25-22, 17-25, at the Adamson University Gym on Sunday morning to improve to an undefeated 4-0 record.
But Castillo was already expecting the win against UST, their first in 2016.
“Di ako na-surprise, sa training pa lang nakikita ko naman how they responded to the program. So nung nag-respond sila sabi ko it will be a good game for us. I was not surprised,” Castillo told Fox Sports.
“Yung win namin symbolizes yung trinabaho namin e, we made a lot of adjustments. Ang pinakamaganda dun, the girls played their role, I played my role. They saw yung essence nung adjustment and yan yung result nun adjustment.”
When NU and UST last met, the Tigresses eked out a five-set thriller and dethroned the Bullpups in the Shakey’s Girls’ Volleyball League of Champions last July.
Castillo, however, downplayed the idea of revenge, and said NU took the game as part of their title defense journey in the UAAP.
“Sabi ko perspective lang, there’s nothing special about this game, nasa first part pa lang kami ng UAAP, hindi pa nga kami natatapos sa first round,” he added.
“Just to remind them that it’s still a game that we need to cross kung papano namin pinaghahadan like before nagpaplano tayo ganun lang.”
As for their program, Castillo said the two-time defending champions are on the right track and expressed his gratitude to his players in their impressive run so far.
“Doon sa programa sa ginagawa namin sa loob ng court, yes we’re on the right track, I’m very proud of the girls kasi isa lang ako e. Isa lang ako e, 14 yan e, so thank you they’re responding really well.”
“These girls are really hardowrking kids e,” he said. – By John Chester Fajardo
