Ed Lucas blasted a home run as the Florida Marlins toppled the Colorado Rockies 3-1, while elsewhere in the National League there was a 2-1 win for the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves against the New York Mets, and an 11-0 thrashing as the Cincinnati Reds tormented the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park with homers for Devin Mesoraco, Shin-Soo Choo and Xavier Paul.
There was also a 4-2 setback for the Arizona Diamondbacks against the Chicago Cubs, for whom Junior Lake cracked a two-run homer.
In the inter-league clash, the in-form Los Angeles Dodgers made hay against the Toronto Blue Jays, posting a 14-5 win in which AJ Ellis crunched a two-run homer and added a trio of RBI singles. The result took the Dodgers to the top of the NL West, above Arizona.
The Baltimore Orioles earned a fifth successive win, beating the Kansas City Royals 9-2 on the back of big performances from Chris Davis and JJ Hardy, who both drove in three runs, while the Tampa Bay Rays overcame the Boston Red Sox 3-0 to close in on their vanquished opponents at the top of the American League East. The Red Sox lead by just half a game.
The Oakland Athletics edged the Houston Astros 4-3, helped by a two-run homer from Josh Reddick, and the New York Yankees fell 3-0 to the Texas Rangers who signed right-hander Matt Garza from the Chicago Cubs too late for him to be involved.
Home runs from Mike Zunino and Kendrys Morales steered the Seattle Mariners to a 2-1 triumph against the Cleveland Indians, while the Detroit Tigers were 7-3 winners in Chicago against the White Sox and the Minnesota Twins eked out a 4-3 victory against the Los Angeles Angels.
