Several news organisations, including ESPN, believe the six-time NBA All Star will move to the Staples Center in a move that will also involve the Philadelphia 76ers and the Denver Nuggets.
The 76ers are said to be acquiring Lakers centre Andrew Bynum and Magic guard Jason Richardson, while Denver will get Philadelphia guard Andre Iguodala as their end of the bargain.
In turn, the Magic will get Arron Afflalo and Al Harrington from the Nuggets, Nikola Vucevic and Maurice Harkless from the 76ers, as well as one protected future first-round pick from each of the other three sides.
ESPN's Stephen A. Smith revealed Howard was extremely excited to be moving to Los Angeles, where he spent plenty of time doing rehabilitation work following a back injury.
"He's ecstatic," Smith spoke of an earlier conversation with centre, who can also play power forward. "He's just anxious to put the events of the past behind him.
"His attitude is this is second home to him already. One of the things he told me, 'I can assure you I'm happy to be here'."
Howard has spent his whole career at the Magic after being drafted as the first overall pick in the 2004 draft, and was part of the United States team that won gold at the 2008 Olympic Games.
