Scott Hartnell and Claude Giroux also scored for Philadelphia while goaltender Ray Emery made 31 saves in the Flyers' eighth win in nine.

Martin St Louis was the hero for the Tampa Bay Lightning in their 4-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets.

The right winger scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period before adding an empty-netter on a fifth power-play in what was a penalty-filled game.

In Glendale, a resilient display from goalie Thomas Greiss ensured the Phoenix Coyotes were more than comfortable while rolling towards a 6-0 victory over the Calgary Flames.

Vladimir Tarasenko scored a goal and set up another in the St Louis Blues' 5-2 win against the Edmonton Oilers while the Anaheim Ducks won for the 14th time in 15 games when beating the Boston Bruins 5-2.

Mattias Ekholm's first NHL goal was the difference as the Nashville Predators edged the San Jose Sharks 3-2 to claim a first win in four attempts, with the New York Islanders needing third-period goals from Calvin De Haan, Cal Clutterbuck and Frans Nielsen to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-3 at the Air Canada Center.

Elsewhere, shootouts were required to separate the Pittsburgh Penguins from the Vancouver Canucks and the Minnesota Wild from the Los Angeles Kings.

The Penguins eventually came out on top in a topsy-turvy 5-4 victory over the Canucks while the Wild pipped the Kings at the post to win 2-1.
