MLB: Fired-up Braves beat Nationals 5-2

Alex Wood had a fiery exchange with home-plate umpire CB Bucknor which seemed to spur the Atlanta Braves on to a 5-2 win over Washington Nationals.

The Braves were trailing by two runs at the bottom of the fifth innings but Wood's anger sparked his side into life, with Dan Uggla and Justin Upton both blasting home runs during a three-run sixth inning.

The win means Atlanta have reduced their magic number to clinch the division to two, with 10 games remaining.

Vernon Wells' two-run double capped a four-run eighth innings as New York Yankees beat Toronto Blue Jays 4-3 at Rogers Centre.

The win means the Yankees have made up ground in the American League Wild Card race. They gained a game in their pursuit of a play-off spot after the Cleveland Indians were beaten 7-2 by Kansas City Royals.

Royals catcher Salvador Perez hit a two-run double to spark a three-run first innings, with Alcides Escobar chipping in with a two-run single in a three-run eighth with an earlier steal of home, as Kansas won the rubber game.

Ed Lucas' 10th-innings home run helped to end a four-game slide for the Miami Marlins as they rain out 4-3 winners over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Lucas drove a 2-2 slider from Cesar Jimenez to give the Marlins the lead and salvage the finale of a three-game series.

Meanwhile, the San Diego Padres rallied in the ninth innings to down the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 at PNC Park.

Trailing by a run going into the ninth, Jedd Gyorko led off with a single. Pinch-hitter Chris Denorfia then followed two outs with a single, which sent Andrew Cashner to third. Logan Forsythe's single sent Cashner home with the tying run, before Rene Rivera singled to right, sending in Denorfia to give the Padres a 3-2 lead.

Elsewhere, Los Angeles Angels beat Oakland Athletics 5-4 and Minnesota Twins beat Chicago White Sox 4-3 thanks to three runs in the second innings.

Seattle Mariners pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma shut out the Detroit Tigers as the west coast side cruised to a 8-0 win while Chris Davis hit a go-ahead two-run single in the 12th innings as the Baltimore Orioles moved within a game of the American League Wild Card with a 5-3 win over Boston Red Sox.

The New York Mets snatched a 5-4 win over San Francisco Giants thanks to a four-run ninth inning while Tampa Bay Rays claimed a 12th-inning 4-3 win over Texas as Desmond Jennings' hit put them ahead of the Rangers for the top AL Wild Card spot.

Chicago Brewers scored five in the first on the way to a 7-0 win over Chicago Cubs while St Louis Cardinals edged out Colorado Rockies 4-3 to extend their National League Central lead.
