Villa want permanent manager

It is understood the preference at Villa Park is to make a direct replacement for Lambert, who left the club on Tuesday, rather than bring in a coach to take control of the first team for the remaining fixtures of the season.

It is believed Villa are strongly considering USA coach Jurgen Klinsmann as an option, while Tim Sherwood???s position may have been weakened by the appointment of Chris Ramsey as permanent QPR manager.

Ramsey was assistant to Sherwood when the latter was in temporary charge at Tottenham Hotspur and Villa are wary of appointing another manager who would attempt to run the team single-handed.

Lambert was left in sole charge in November when his assistant Roy Keane quit to concentrate on his job as Republic of Ireland No 2 to Martin O’Neill.

First-team coach Scott Marshall has been placed in caretaker charge alongside goalkeeping coach Andy Marshall and the pair will select the team for Sunday???s FA Cup tie against Leicester City at Villa Park.
