On this day in 1990, Italian footballer Roberto Baggio stunned the world with his then world record transfer fee of £8 million for a move from Fiorentina to Juventus.

The star striker would justify the price, however, scoring 78 goals in 141 appearances for Juventus, solidifying his status as a club and international legend.

Local surfers Midget Farrelly and Phyllis O’Donnell won the men’s and women’s titles respectively.
