Rybarikova battles through opener in DC

Seventh seed Magdalena Rybarikova recovered from a set down to beat Christina McHale and progress to the second round of the Citi Open in Washington D.C.

The Slovakian world number 39 could not get into her groove in the first set but rallied in the second, saving three break points, before dominating on her serve in the decider to close out a 2-6 6-4 6-2 win.

The 24-year-old will face either Jana Cepelova or Kiki Bertens in the next round while Argentina's Paula Ormaechea booked a meeting with either Olga Puchkova or second seed Sloane Stephens with an easy 6-1 6-1 dismissal of Maryland's Beatrice Capra.

In the men's draw, Indian qualifier Somdev Devvarman needed only an hour and 16 minutes to oust lucky loser Rhyne Williams 7-5 6-1, teeing up a second-round clash with ninth seed Alexandr Dolgopolov.
