The match pitted the world 96 against the player ranked 310th and it was the higher-placed man who came through, winning 80% of points on his first serve and breaking four times to seal a 6-2 6-4 victory.

The only other seed in action, number five Adrian Mannarino, overcame a second-set meltdown to beat another Colombian, Alejandro Gonzalez, 6-4 0-6 6-4.

The Frenchman went to pieces after taking the first set, winning just one point on serve in the second, but recovered to take the third and seal his progress.

There were also wins for Italy's Matteo Viola and Matthew Ebden of Australia.
