In the women's second round, top seed and world number one Serena Williams needed four minutes longer to defeat Spanish wild-card Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-2 7-5.
Also in the women's second round there were wins for 14th seed Marion Bartoli over Spanish qualifier Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor, and Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova.
Eighth seed Richard Gasquet was dumped out of the men's second round by Spain's Daniel Gimeno-Traver 7-5 3-6 6-4, while 16th seed Gilles Simon beat fellow Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 6-4 7-6 (7/5).
In the first round, ninth seed Janko Tipsarevic was surprised 7-6 (7/5) 6-3 by Argentina's Juan Monaco, but 13th seed
Tommy Haas and 16th seed Stanislas Wawrinka advanced with wins over Andreas Seppi and Marius Copil respectively.
