On the female half of the draw, the fourth-seeded Carla Suarez-Navarro got the better of Marina Erakovic for the loss of just three games, while the fifth-ranked Sorana Cirstea was a three-set victor against Anabel Medina Garrigues.
Elena Vesnina also won on Monday, as did Svetlana Kuznetsova, Yana Wickmayer and Ayumi Morita, who saw off Laura Robson.
The British number one, currently rated at 41st in the world, was beaten in straight sets by the Japanese.
Morita, two places below her, eased to a 6-2 7-5 success, as Robson struggled with her serve.
She sent down 10 double faults in total and had low percentages on both first and second serves, giving Morita a comfortable day's work.
In the men's draw, sixth seed Benoit Paire saw off Igor Sijsling, David Goffin got the better of Pedro Sousa and Denis Istomin was a winner against Evgeny Donskoy.
