Federer, bidding to secure crucial points to pip rival Novak Djokovic to the year-ending world number one position, was broken in the second set but seldom troubled by the world number 88 on his way to round two.

Third seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet hit back from a set down to defeat Dutchman Robin Haase 4-6 6-3 6-2, seizing both break point opportunities in the final set to join Federer in the second round.

Another Frenchman, Julien Benneteau, also came back from behind to beat Russian qualifier Andrey Kuznetsov 4-6 6-3 6-3, while Polish qualifier Lukasz Kubot overcame Lukas Lacko of Slovenia 6-4 6-4.
