The Frenchman and the top seed in the tournament, currently clinging on to the eighth and final qualification place for next month's lucrative showdown, proved too strong for Japan's Go Soeda, coming through 6-2 7-6 (8/6) in 98 minutes.

Second seed Tomas Berdych, who already has one foot in London, beat Estonia's Jurgen Zopp 6-1 6-4, while seventh seed Marcos Baghdatis led Colombia's Alejandro Falla 6-0 3-0 when the Colombian retired.

Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky pulled off a minor upset to reach the quarter-final stage as he beat Spanish fifth seed Feliciano Lopez 7-6 (7-5) 7-5 to advance.
