Berdych through in Tokyo
Second seed Tomas Berdych advanced to the second round of the ATP Rakuten Japan Open today with a straight-sets victory over Benoit Paire in Tokyo.
The 27-year-old Czech stormed through the first set but had to save a set-point in the second-set tie-break before prevailing 6-1 7-6 (8/6) against the Frenchman.
Slovakian Lukas Lacko earlier breezed past Spaniard Albert Ramos 6-0 6-2 to set up a second-round clash with either top seed Andy Murray or Gael Monfils.
In other first-round action on Monday, seventh-seeded Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka saw off home favourite Hiroki Moriya 7-5 4-6 6-4 and Serbia's Viktor Troicki overcame Dutchman Robin Haase 6-2 6-3.
