Haase, ranked 42 in the world, defeated Spaniard Albert Montanes 12 months and retained his title with an assured display against the German top seed.

Despite having lost the first set in a one-sided tie-break, the 25-year-old Haase responded with great purpose in a rain-interrupted final on the clay.

It was just Haase's second ATP Tour title following his Kitzbuhel Cup victory in 2011.

Haase now flies out to London for the Olympic Games, where he is due to represent his country against Frenchman Richard Gasquet on Sunday.
