The Serbian, seeded 10th, never got going and crashed out to Tamira Paszek, losing her first-round clash 7-5 6-4.

There were no such issues for ninth seed Andrea Petkovic of Germany, who beat Lucie Safarova 7-6 (7/5) 6-4, or seventh seed and former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone, who breezed past Serbian's Bojana Jovanovski 6-1 6-3.

Fellow Italian and 15th seed Roberta Vinci beat Canada's Rebecca Marino, while Svetlana Kuznetsova progressed thanks to an injury to Romania's Alexandra Dulgheru.

The Russian 16th seed was leading 6-2 4-1 when a knee injury did for Dulgheru.

Elsewhere there were wins for Petra Cetkovska of the Czech Republic, Australia's Jarmila Gajdosova and Swede Sofia Arvidsson.
