Ferrer edges out Monfils in Valencia Open

Top seed David Ferrer took just 62 minutes to ease past former world top 10 star Gael Monfils and move into the second round of the Valencia Open on Wednesday.

Ferrer broke the Frenchman - now down at number 31 in the rankings - twice in each set as he shrugged off the disappointment of Sunday's Stockholm Open final defeat to Grigor Dimitrov.

But second seed Tommy Haas bowed out 3-6 6-3 6-3 in an all-German battle with Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Fourth seed John Isner needed two tie-break sets to dispose of Latvia's Ernests Gulbis 7-6 (7/4) 7-6 (7/2), and Italian seventh seed Fabio Fognini beat Spain's Marcel Granollers 6-3 6-2.

Jarkko Nieminen beat Benoit Paire 6-3 6-3 while in the evening match Russia's Dmitry Tursunov got the better of Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut 6-2 7-6 (7/3).
