German Kerber, chasing her first WTA title of the year and third of her career, broke her Spanish opponent seven times en route to a 6-0 6-1 triumph.
Ana Ivanovic, the 11th seed, was similarly clinical in seeing off Kerber's compatriot Annika Beck in the first round, the Serbian requiring only 50 minutes to claim a 6-1 6-1 win - having lost the opening game of both sets.
Two more seeds also progressed through today, with number seven Petra Kvitova winning her second-round match against wild card Belinda Bencic 7-5 6-4 while in first-round action Simona Halep (13) was leading Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 3-6 7-6 (7/5) 3-0 when her Russian opponent retired.
It was not a clean sweep for the seeds though, with number eight Roberta Vinci sent crashing out in the second round by Lucie Safarova, 7-5 6-4.
Carla Suarez-Navarro, the 10th seed from Spain, was also beaten as she lost her first-round match to American Madison Keys 5-7 7-5 6-2.
Other first-round victors on Monday were Andrea Petkovic, Aleksandra Wozniak, Peng Shuai, Magdalena Rybarikova, Ayumi Morita, Misaki Doi, Flavia Pennetta, Eugenie Bouchard, Casey Dellacqua and 1995 champion Kimiko Date Krumm.
