The Wimbledon champion has been drawn to face either Gulbis or Mikhail Youzhny in his opening match of the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati next week.
Murray, surprisingly beaten in straight sets by Gulbis in the last 16 in Montreal, has a first-round bye in the Masters 1000 event - his final tournament before the defence of his US Open crown begins on August 26.
He will be keen on revenge if the pair do meet, while a match against Youzhny would hold fewer fears with the Russian have been dispatched during Murray's run in SW19.
Murray is in the same quarter of the draw as Tomas Berdych and is seeded to face Rafael Nadal in the last four.
However, Nadal may first have to get past old rival Roger Federer as the pair have been placed in the same quarter.
Five-time champion Federer, now the world number five, will open against either Philipp Kohlschreiber or Mardy Fish. Nadal will start his campaign against a qualifer.
In the top half of the draw, top seed Novak Djokovic will open his history bid against either Juan Monaco or Jurgen Melzer. The Serb knows victory in Ohio will mean he becomes the first player to win all nine Masters 1000 events on the ATP World Tour.
Djokovic is seeded to face Richard Gasquet in the last eight - a player he crushed at the same stage in Montreal on Friday.
David Ferrer is his scheduled semi-final foe but recent Washington winner Juan Martin Del Potro, in the same section, may have something to say about that.
The women's draw sees the world's no three of Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova all in the same field for the first time since Wimbledon.
Sharapova, who has not played since losing in the second round in SW19 due to a hip injury, faces a potentially tricky test on her return.
Her opening match will be against either rising American star Sloane Stephens or a qualifier.
Sharapova is in the same half of the draw as Azarenka with Williams seeded to meet Agnieszka Radwanska in the top half.
