Lesia Tsurenko defended her Mexican Open title on Saturday with a hard-fought three-set victory over Switzerland’s Stefanie Voegele in Acapulco.
Tsurenko got off to a slow start and struggled to deal with some inspired play from the 183rd ranked Voegele as the unheralded Swiss took the first set 7-5.
The seventh seed was then three points away from a surprise defeat before she managed to find a second wind and take the second set into a tie-break, which she then won 7-2.
The tie-break loss seemed to knock the stuffing out of Voegele as the Ukrainian raced into a 3-0 love lead early in the third, breaking her opponent for a third time to seal the deciding set and match 5-7, 7-6(7-2), 6-2.

It was Tsurenko’s fourth ATP singles title, the world number 40 winning a title each year since 2015.
