Roger Federer will face Belgium's David Goffin in the quarter-finals of the Gerry Weber Open, as he continues his quest for a ninth title in Halle.
Top seed Federer secured a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Malek Jaziri on Thursday, breaking his opponent in the ninth game of the first set, before recovering from a 0-3 deficit in the second.
Goffin advanced when his opponent Sergiy Stakhovsky retired hurt from their second-round match. The Belgian was leading 4-6, 7-5, 2-0 at the time.
Federer and Goffin have faced each other on four previous occasions, with the Swiss ace coming out on top in all four of them.
Also advancing on the day was local favourite Phillip Kohlschreiber, who beat Ivo Karlovic 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, 7-5, and in-form Austrian Dominic Thiem, who defeated Teymuraz Gabashvili 6-4, 6-1.
