Steve Johnson and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez are set to clash in the quarter-finals of the Valencia Open after both recorded second-round victories on Thursday.
Johnson made it all the way to the finals in Vienna last week, and he maintained that good form by knocking out second seed Feliciano Lopez 6-4 7-6 (7-3) in 75 minutes.
The American was broken when serving for the match at 5-4 in the second set, but held his nerve to prevail in the ensuing tie-break.
He moves on to face another Spaniard in sixth seed Garcia-Lopez, who beat qualifier Toro Daniel 6-3 6-4.
Fourth seed Fabio Fognini bowed out of the event after going down 6-2 7-6 (7-3) to Germany's Mischa Zverev, while French fifth seed Benoit Paire also joined the casualty list after losing 6-3 2-6 6-3 to Portugal's Joao Sousa.
Seventh seed Roberto Bautista-Agut was more fortunate, defeating Andrey Rublev 6-2 6-3.
