ABL: Rampant Beermen drop Slammers

The San Miguel Beermen stayed red hot as they racked up 14 wins in a row after dispatching of the Sports Rev Thailand Slammers 78-61 on Wednesday.

Brian Williams

Brian Williams led the Beermen with 16 points and 20 rebounds followed by Asi Taulava's 12 points. RJ Rizada rounded off the Beermen's top three with 11 points.

The Beermen had a slow start to the game and were a little sluggish on offense during the first quarter. The Slammers quickly capitalized on that and Chris Charles ran rampant, scoring 8 of his team's total from the first ten minutes.

With less than two minutes remaining in the quarter the Slammers found themselves leading 19-7 when the Beermen started their comeback to pull in to within just three points at 14-17 moments later. The Slammers were able to hold on however and held a 19-15 lead heading into the second quarter.

Froilan Baguion extended the Slammers lead in the second quarter and a pair of free throws gave them their biggest lead of the game at 28-19. Intent on ensuring their streak stayed alive, the Beermen rallied and got to within just one point off a Taulava basket with 2:17 left till the half. The Beermen defense was also out in full force, limiting the Slammers to just nine points in the entire period. The Beermen ended the final five minutes on a 12-0 run for the 31-28 lead heading into the locker rooms.

Taulava opened up the half for the Beermen with back to back baskets and the Beermen extended their lead to 36-30. Rizada continued his solid performance with a basket to put a comfortable 14 point berth between the teams at 44-30 with less than seven minutes remaining. Baguion tried to spark the Slammers offense and they pulled into within four points with half the quarter remaining. A Charles jumper at the 1:28 mark then put them in to just three but that was the closest the Slammers were able to get for the rest of the game. Jeric Fortuna ended the quarter on fire, sinking in a gorgeous three and following that up immediately with a basket and a pair of free throws that gave the Beermen the 54-45 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

With the momentum fully on their side, the Beermen powered through the fourth quarter and finished the game in style. After an Acuna shot gave them an 11 point lead in the opening minute the Beermen never let the Slammers get within a single digit difference for the rest of the game and in the end they recorded the 78-61 win.

Despite the loss, Chris Charles managed 28 points and 11 rebounds but none of his teammates were able to get in the double digits. Slammers head coach Joe Bryant will need the rest of his team to step up on Saturday if they want to make sure they get the playoffs ticket.
