The Indian badminton sensation was dominant all through, starting with an 8-1 lead in the first game before winning consecutive points against her French challenger to seal the first set 21-10.
Hongyan gave a tough fight in the second and stayed in the contest till 15-14. However, Saina went for the kill with a five-point burst to move to 19-15. In the end, it was Saina who eventually won the set 20-17 and booked herself a quarter-final berth.
In the quarterfinal on Friday, Saina will meet the winner of the tie between Xuerui Li of China and Maria Febe Kusumastuti of Indonesia.
Meanwhile, another India's doubles hope was crushed in only 30 minutes. Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa were blown away 21-10, 21-15 by Qing Tian and Yunlei Zhao of China in the women's doubles second round.
