Wolff: Bottas has ‘exceeeded expectations’

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has said Valtteri Bottas has so far “exceeded expectations” since joining in the off-season from Williams.

The Finn secured his first-ever win in Formula 1 when holding off Sebastian Vettel in Sochi and has been on the podium in three other races, most recently in Canada.

Valtteri Bottas believes that the key to secure a fresh contract with the Mercedes team for 2018 is now producing consistent strong form. "It's about delivering on the level where the car is, and helping with the development. It's about working as a team, and winning races, which normally is what a team requires." "Mercedes is a winning team, at a high level, so they expect a lot from the driver. Almost every driver would like to drive for Mercedes, so for sure I need to perform to stay. My ambition is to have a long-term relationship with the team and I hope it is possible" Valtteri said. Bottas is at the moment third in the drivers championship and scored so far 36 points less than his teammate Hamilton. Bottas is hoping to extend his stay at Mercedes beyond the end of the season and has clearly made a good first impression on the boss.

"Valtteri is in a strong position," said Wolff via the Mercedes official website.

"You would never think he joined the team very last minute over the winter and, after, seven Grands Prix, he has exceeded even our expectations.

"He’s been on pole, won a race and challenged Lewis on both Saturday and Sundays. For him, it’s now just about putting it all together."

Wolff also added that he feels Lewis Hamilton is in the best frame of mind now since he first joined the Silver Arrows.

He said: Lewis is in the best place I have seen him during any of the last five years since he joined the team.

"Not only because he had a great weekend in Montreal – but because he is coping so well with the difficult days. This is what the very best are made of. When the fight gets tough, they get over it quickly and maximise their opportunities."
