Sainz fastest as Dakar rally begins

Former world rally champion Carlos Sainz topped the time sheets as the 2013 Dakar Rally began with a special stage in Peru.

The Spaniard, winner of the Dakar Rally in 2010, made his return to the event by leading from the front in his Buggy, completing the 13km course in seven minutes 40 seconds.

Reigning champion Stephane Peterhansel, among the favourites in his Mini, had to settle for eighth place, with Argentina's Lucio Alvarez clocking the second fastest time in his Toyota and Frenchman Guerlain Chicherit third in his SMG.

American Robby Gordon got off to a terrible start with a technical fault leaving his Hummer over 10 minutes down.

Chilean Francisco Lopez led the motorcycles home on his KTM in a time of seven minutes 51 seconds, narrowly ahead of Dutchman Frans Verhoeven's Yamaha.

Local rider Flores Seminario led the quads home on his Yamaha.
